The Common Council unanimously approved a $1.5 million spending plan using state dollars for redesign work as part of the Maritime Aquarium Functional Replacement Project. The scope of the project includes work on the theater and its additions.
According to officials, the redesign will include losing nearly 1,000-square-feet of space and will slightly shift eastward to make room for plumbing work in the area.
As part of the project, the current Maritime Aquarium IMAX Theater is set to be demolished to allow for the realignment of railroad tracks in the area, city officials said. Last year, the Common Council approved an agreement that includes the reconstruction of the theater and other parts of the aquarium in a different location.
City officials said that the aquarium’s replacement plan includes the construction of a multi-story, near 1200-square-foot addition to the east of the main entrance. That location would be home to a 178-seat, fully-functioning 4D theater. The technology at the theater is expected to influence theater-goer’s senses.
The project was initially set to get off the ground late last year, but initial responses from contractors exceeded the proposed budget, city officials noted. Instead, they are moving forward with the restructured plan. Norwalk has full responsibility over the space, and the project.
